Liverpool overtake Villarreal with a double and approach the Champions League final
Liverpool scored twice in two minutes in the second half to beat Villarreal in the semi-finals of the Champions League on Wednesday.
Villarreal defended heavily in the first half to frustrate the six-time European champions, and Thiago Alcantara came close to opening the scoring with a huge shot from a long range that hit the post.
Liverpool pressed after the break and moments after a goal was cancelled out by Brazilian Roberto Firmino on the grounds of infiltration.
Captain Jordan Henderson puts Liverpool ahead in the 53rd minute, with the Reds leading to a goal that came through friendly flames, after Henderson lifted the ball to hit The Ecuadorian Pervis and tardily into the net.
Two minutes later, Egyptian Mohamed Salah sent a cross into the box to Saudi Mane, who ended it in the net with Villarreal goalkeeper Geronimo Rowley from close range.
Liverpool had several chances to add more goals, but will be closer to reaching the final when they meet Villarreal in next week's second leg in Spain.
